10 Tips That Could Save Lives at Your Workplace

Published August 16, 2019

Usually, when you think of the term “workplace accident” the first thing that comes to mind is a job that is quite risky, jobs like firefighting, police work, construction or working with heavy machinery. However, accidents can happen anywhere.

This is why workplace safety needs to be taken seriously. It is every company’s responsibility to make sure that their workplace meets safety standards and provides a safe environment for everyone working in it. Usually, when protocols aren’t followed, there is a higher risk of serious injuries.

While accidents happen no matter how careful you are, it still pays to follow these safety tips.

1. Only Assign People to Jobs They Are Trained For

So, one of the first things you can do is to just say no. While this may sound simple, any employer knows that it’s hard to say no to a person that is eager to work. Still, sometimes, you simply have to, for the safety of everybody at your worksite.

This is because, no matter how smart or crafty a person is, there are some jobs that you need special training for. And if you haven’t undergone proper training, well, you may just hurt somebody.

Just remember that safety comes first, always. So, as long as you provide your employees with the relevant training, you are good to go. Otherwise, don’t let them risk their lives and the lives of others.

2. Always Be Free to Speak to Your Workers

Remember that making yourself available for consultations is very important. An employee should always speak with a supervisor before they start doing a task for the first time. Especially if the task tends to be dangerous. In this situation, you can give out expert advice or help.

3. Wear the Proper Gear

Some employees may not understand the importance of wearing appropriate uniforms at work. Make sure your staff know the real purpose of uniforms in the workplace.

Uniforms and protective garments, vests, or identification cards are given to every employee for uniformity and protection purposes. These uniforms have functional benefits that include keeping workers safe.

Uniforms that have been certified as “high visibility” can save a workers life. It makes them much easier to see, and so a passing crane or truck driver will spot and avoid them more easily. And flame resistant uniforms are, well, flame resistant and will save their lives in case of an accident.

4. Make Sure Your Workers Are Prepared 24/7

Keep in mind that most workplace accidents can be avoided simply and easily. All you have to do is be mindful of the rules. That’s why you should always remind your workers to stay alert and to keep their eyes open in case disaster strikes.

Know that as your work conditions change, for better or for worse, so do hazards.

5. Organise a Rescue Task Force

Having a team to look after everyone in case of emergencies is comforting. Companies should form a medic or rescue team that is responsible for managing the rest of the workers.

The responsibility of the team is to keep workers calm in an emergency, to administer first-aid or immediate treatment, and to monitor any possible hazards.

6. Have Regular Emergency Drills

Remember that fire drills are there for a reason. A very good reason. Never take them for granted, since a drill can save your life in an emergency.

7. Have First Aid Posters and Safety Reminders at Your Workplace

In order to avoid future accidents at work and keep everyone aware of the importance of workplace safety, make sure to post safety reminder signs or health posters that are visible to all employees.

Ask everyone to read and understand these posters. Sometimes, even when reminder posters are displayed all over the place, some employees won’t read them, so it’s best to make sure that they clearly understand the risks involved with their work.

8. Be Mindful of All Safety Procedures

For employers, implement safety procedures that employees should follow. It’s for your safety and theirs as well.

9. Safety Is the Most Important Thing

Employers should always prioritise the safety and health of their workers no matter what. Making them feel that you value their safety over profit means a lot to employees and it can go a long way.

Employees often repay their employer’s with loyalty, honesty, hard work, and enthusiasm. This directly translates to increased productivity.

10. Be on Watch for Safety Hazards

Look out for possible causes of accidents and report it to the proper authority/management. It pays to be curious. Report damaged stairs, faulty wiring, or busted lights to management. Do not wait for accidents to happen before you tell someone about the possible risks you’ve noticed.

Both employees and employers can take precautionary measures to prevent accidents at work. However, a worker who follows safety measures and procedures set by their employer will be able to prevent future accidents.

OSHA’s Injury and Illness Prevention Programs can pinpoint specific hazards in the workplace and give management a detailed evaluation with tips for improvement. Every office and small business can and should take advantage of it.
